Phononic Crystal
In partnership with the university of Bath we have just received an award to make something called a Phonic Crystal.
Basically its a great big structure ( 5m x 5m x 2.5m) that uses sound waves to demonstrate how crystal work. The idea is that sound comes in from one side and is refracted and comes out at an angle on another side. ( a bit like what happens to light when gets defracted as it goes through a prism). so weirdly the sound doesn’t come out from where you think it should but seems to be louder in sweet spots in what appears to be odd places around the structure. We can make it so that you can actually go inside it and experience what its like to be a photon. The idea is to encourage people to get an interest in physics through experimental results, touch sight and hearing rather than immediately engaging with the theory which can put a lot of people off at first. We have introduced the work to blind and partially sighted students from New College Worcester,
Im partnered by Dr Andriy Gorbach and Alex Narduzzo for Bath University and Lee Berwick Sound Artist http://www.leeberwick.com
We have taken this to the Green Man Festival and Wiltshire Science Festival this year, and will be taking a larger version to the Festival of Tomorrow Show 2024 where students from the New College Worcester will participate in its design and be resent to talk to the public abut its application.
